Oh goodness- today is the big reveal of our Coastal Modern Farmhouse Pool House!
It all started with a blank slate shed in our backyard already built, just needing some love to make it modern and pretty.
We completed and overhauled the exterior, assessed our needs for the pool house room, found some inspirations, planned out the room, and took you through our process along the way. This summer we turned our boring shed into a beautiful coastal modern farmhouse pool house!

OK- If you are reading this, that means that you are excited to see the final reveal of our space! Me too–Let’s get started!
Enjoy~
Coastal Modern Farmhouse Pool House- the Final Reveal
OK- this turned out SO GOOD! You know when you envision a space, plan it all out, and then execute it and it looks better than expected? That’s exactly what happened with this project!
I’m extremely happy with the pool house reveal and love all the bright, modern, farmhouse vibes this room now has!
What are you waiting for? Come on in to our newly renovated pool house!
The Pool House Entry
As you open the double french door and enter, you will see the bright and cheery space that awaits you. A nice welcome for guests coming over for a pool day for sure!
Come in a little further and now the 2 separate spaces are evident. We have the pool house bathroom at the back and a change room with all the storage necessary as you enter.
The Pool House Change Room
Below is a close-up of our pool house change room bench. As you can see, there is lots of space for guests to place their belongings, hang up their towels, and get ready for a beautiful pool day!
Here’s a wide-angled view of the pool house space. This gives a great perspective of the entire room. We used a barn door to bring in some farmhouse style and provide some privacy for anyone using the outdoor pool house bathroom. Plus…it tucks away nicely and doesn’t use up a lot of space- efficiency is key!
On the right-hand side of the pool house, we added a low storage unit that we had hanging around in our basement and added some much-needed baskets that match the color scheme. These 2 windows provide lots of natural light that pours into this space throughout the day making it super bright and cheery!
The Pool House Bathroom
Alright, let’s check out the pool house bathroom.
We actually did a small update on our interior powder room recently. We bought a new vanity and faucet to revamp the space and provide us some much-needed storage. (That blog post will come out soon enough…) That allowed us to use the old pedestal sink and faucet from the powder room in the pool shed bathroom at no additional cost!
It’s not the most glamourous bathroom, but it is ONLY an outdoor pool house after all!
Yes, it’s not a large space, but the functionality makes it ideal for our family & guests. It checks off all of our needs for a pool house including a bathroom, guest change room, storage for pool towels & toys + it has the farmhouse look as well!
It’s all in the Details:
Let’s take a closer look at some of the details in our Coastal Modern Farmhouse Pool House, shall we?
1-Storage Bookshelf
First up is our little white storage unit. We had this lying around in our basement waiting for a new purpose. Well, we found its purpose all right– it was a perfect size and fit for under our 2 pool house windows.
These grey plastic Dollar Store baskets were perfect for this storage unit. I store all our pool toys, goggles, water guns, sunscreen, cleaning supplies, and extra bathroom hand towels or soaps in here! They provide some much-needed “hidden” storage and are easy to wipe down and dry too.
In between the 2 windows, I had a perfect little spot for some coastal-themed family artwork. My kiddos searched hard at their nana & papa’s neighborhood beach for lots of beach glass. We took that beach glass and turned it into an afternoon art session in which the kiddos created animals of the ocean.
We have a dolphin, swordfish, and even a hammerhead shark– can you guess them correctly below? 😉 I think they turned out pretty cute!
Another way to add some coastal vibes into a room is with greenery. I love this plant and often get a few of them each summer to display around the pool area. It’s crazy and fun and easy to maintain as well!
2-Barn Door
Here’s a closer look at the barn door handle. I love it because it is black and chunky and really has the whole farmhouse look to it!
This barn door system was purchased at Costco. It happened to be in-store and my husband picked it up as a surprise for me- the best part about it was the cost! Less than $300 for the entire unit! It was already primed and painted this creamy white color, so we decided to paint the wall behind BLUE for some visual contrast.
3-Pool House Bench & Storage
Storage was something that was needed in the space, especially for all our clean pool towels. We made sure to have a built-in cubby unit to incase our poolside bar fridge, as well as lots of room for towels too!
My husband built this unit from MDF boards and it was painted with our favorite trim & door paint from Home Hardware in Milk Moustache. Add some cute baskets that go along with the coastal modern farmhouse feel and VOILA!
I’m sure you’ve noticed the use of shiplap as much as possible in the pool house! We used it as the backdrop to our change room bench, the focal wall in the bathroom, as well as the wall with the 2 windows!
Shiplap is the easiest way to pull off a farmhouse feel in any space! Paint it up nicely with some white paint and perfecto! Again, we use our signature trim and door white paint color- Milk Moustache from Home Hardware!
We decided to build our pool house bench out of the barn board to match the ceiling and tie in the space visually. I love how it turned out!
These hooks have style! We used the same ones purchased from Amazon in our boys’ bedroom revamp project. I love the matte black look and the curved hook!
4-The Ceiling
Here is a great look at the ceiling. We used barn board and created a plank ceiling effect. The barn board has a lot of rustic charm to it and perfect for achieving a farmhouse feel. Look at all the cool knots and imperfections too!
We’ve been longing for the perfect location to hang our pool rules sign. My husband made it last summer and now it finally has a home! Doesn’t it look sharp against the shiplap? Plus, this is the first thing you see when you enter the pool house!
5-Pool House Bathroom
Like I mentioned above, our outdoor bathroom isn’t anything fancy. It’s just a place for people to use when they are sopping wet from being in the pool. It saves our hardwood floors inside our home too!
Unfortunately, the previous owner only ran a water line to our pool shed and not all the plumbing required for a standard toilet. This resulted in us finding a compost toilet at Home Depot that had really high ratings and looks pretty decent to use. It’s a Separett Villa Electric Compost Toilet 12V.
And that’s that! I hope you enjoyed our look at the finer details of our pool house makeover!

We were so frugal on this project and were able to use lots of items from around our home already- as much as we wanted a posh pool house, we are just very careful as to how we spend our money. Besides…this is really only a pool house!
Pretty awesome right!?
hi there! This is a great post! Can I ask how you feel about the compost toilet now that you have used it for a while? Do people use it? does it smell?
Hi! Thanks so much for checking out our Pool House post. Our kids and all their friends use it as they run in and out of the pool all summer long… and it doesn’t smell at all! The compost toilet has a built-in fan that prevents it from smelling…one of the reasons why we purchased this model. Hope this helps 🙂
