Hello Everyone!

Welcome back to check out our pool house project where we turn our blank canvas into a beautiful Coastal Modern Farmhouse style space!  In the last post, I revealed our needs, inspiration, and exterior updates for our pool shed.

If you missed that post, you can read it here–>  How to Revamp your Pool House- Inside and Out!

Today, I’ll take you through the interior renovation and the reno process itself.

Let’s get started!

Modern Farmhouse Pool House

The Pool Shed- Before

Remember that the pool shed was already built when we bought our home, but it was completely unfinished and a blank canvas.

There were two separate spaces including an equipment room and the pool house room.  Our focus is on finishing the pool house room for guests.

As mentioned in the last post, we needed the pool house room to:

  • store pool toys, etc
  • be a change room for guests
  • provide an outdoor bathroom (so no nature pees or wet hardwoods inside anymore!)
  • have a coastal modern farmhouse design- to match the interior of our home and include shiplap, barn board, and a barn door too!
  • include lots of storage for fresh towels
  • have space for a bar fridge for beverages around the pool!

Here was our inspiration mood board for our pool house space.

OK- Lots of inspiration- now to come up with the plan!

The Pool House Project- Plan

Our pool shed room is a 10 x 12 space with a french double door entry and 2 small side windows.  In order to get a better idea for space planning, we need to get rid of everything inside to properly assess the room.

OK- Time to clear it all out!

Pool Shed Space Before

Once everything was out and the room was cleaned up, we were able to play around with the possible scenarios.  Look at how much larger the pool house room seems without all the pool toys & such!

Pool Shed - Blank Canvas

We even got out the chalk and mapped out a few different plans.  We used two different color chalks.  This allowed us to imagine walking into the room and seeing which was the best plan for the space!

Due to all the doors and windows in the small pool house room, it was important for us to have a spot for a private bathroom that still made the rest of the space feel large, open, and bright.

In the end, we decided to put the bathroom at the back of the room and install a sliding barn door to provide privacy.  This way, there is still plenty of space when you first enter the pool house for a built-in bench & storage unit!  This will maximize the space and meet our needs outlined above.

Now that we have the plan, we are ready to reno!  No demo necessary for this project, so let’s get right into it!

The Pool Shed- Reno Project

1- Wall Construction

Our first step in our pool shed project was to build our separate bathroom.  The wall was going up just after our 2nd window and this still gave us a nice wide 3.5 ft bathroom space behind.

2-Flooring and Drywall

Once the wall was in place, the flooring was laid.  We were fortunate to get our flooring for FREE!  Yes– it is actually the old laminate from our main floor.  We managed to salvage enough for the pool shed that wasn’t cracked, scratched, or damaged.  It was the perfect option for the pool house change room as it is resistant to water too!

Next… on to drywall.  Because we opted to have lots of shiplap on the walls, there were only a few places that needed to be perfectly mudded and my hubby could handle those jobs!

Pool Shed Drywall

Drywall is so messy!  I couldn’t wait to clean it all up and get to the next step.  That is always the case!

3-Painting

The few walls that were needed to be painted were mudded, sanded, and primed.

We had some leftover blue paint from our boy’s bedroom for the divider wall that we built between the bathroom and the rest of the pool house change room!  The blue color works so well with our coastal design!

4-The Ceiling

I bet you were wondering why the ceiling didn’t get drywalled?  We have been using barn board on various projects around the home such as the boys’ bedroom feature wall and a few decor signs.

We wanted to try using the barn boards as a ceiling plank and thought that this might be a great location to do so!  In the end, it turned out pretty cool looking and fits right into our modern farmhouse style!

5-The Built-in

The picture below shows the wall that the built-in unit was going to be.  It ended up being 8 ft long and will have lots of storage for towels, our bar fridge, and a change room bench with hooks!

Location for Pool Shed Built-in

Speaking of built-in… it is getting installed!  This is such an exciting moment for the pool house project!  This is the point of the project when you can start seeing the vision come to life!

Pool Shed Built-in Begins

I am so thankful for a hubby who is able to make my project ideas become reality.  It really does require a lot of talent!  We have our storage tower on the right-hand side that gives us 3 cubbies for lots of towels and house our bar fridge too!

The storage tower is all made out of MDF including the trim surrounds.  The shiplap is super easy to install, already primed, and made by Metrie.  We put shiplap behind our barn wood bench, the opposite wall to the bench, as well as the back wall in the bathroom. Yes…we love our shiplap! 🙂

Built In Change Room Bench

Lots of painting to make the space feel complete, the finish line is near!  We used Home Hardware’s Beautitone paint in the color Milk Moustache- our white go-to color!

6- The Barn Door

Almost done!  One of the last projects in the pool house change room is to hang the barn door system.  We purchased this from Costco for less than $600!  It already came pre-painted in white which is why we painted the wall behind it a darker blue to provide a visual contrast in the room!

The steps were simple to install– a few cuts, use the level, screw in place- and you are set!  In a matter of an hour, our barn door system was hung and ready to use.

Looking good, just need to add the handle–>

And that is where we wrap up for today…so sorry!

Stay tuned- next post we will be revealing the final pool house change room!  I can’t wait to show you how good it turned out…and all the finishing touches we added!
