It’s happening again…the One Room Challenge!  To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I was going to enter this round.  But with a little motivation from outside sources, I signed myself up and began envisioning the design for our space we chose!  To read a bit more about why I ALMOST didn’t join this round, read the post linked below.

What is the One Room Challenge?

Just in case you are new to the One Room Challenge, it started in 2011 by Linda Weinstein. The One Room Challenge (ORC) is an online renovator’s challenge to makeover one room in their home over the course of 6 weeks and share their experience along the way.

There are 20 featured designers as well as guest participants, like me,  joining in for the support and advice.

Here is a link to the ORC Blog!

This will be my SECOND time completing the ORC challenge!  Here’s a look back down memory lane from my first One Room Challenge- The Modern Farmhouse Kitchen:

This Year…

I had a few rooms in mind when contemplating signing up for this challenge this round.  They included:

  • The Kids Playroom
  • Our Little Girl’s Room
  • The Kids Bathroom
  • Our Guest Bedroom

I’m SO HAPPY that we chose the kids playroom and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about how to design this space and bring the “cool” factor to this room.

The Playroom:

Here’s a little background info on this room:

Playroom Before

  • The room was a guest bedroom prior to us moving into the house in the basement.  Check out the picture –>
  • The basement is currently partially complete including this room, the laundry room, and another room that was the office space.
  • When we moved in, we literally took all the kids toys and shoved them into this room, as it was the largest finished space in the basement that the kids could call their own.
  • Last year, we focused on de-cluttering our “stuff” and sold the majority of our baby items as well as toys the kids no longer played with.  The remainder of our items were then donated to a local charity.
  • This year, our winter goal is to finish the basement- lighting, drywall, flooring, paint, fireplace, etc.  It would be nice to have a completely finished home, and then we can just design & finish it room by room after that– no more drywall dust!
  • Finally, it would be nice to have a playroom that reflects our kids needs & wants with a bit of added character.  Our boys are 9 & almost 7, and our little girl will be 5 this month!  This will give them a nice place to play as winter draws nearer and our basement reno gets underway in a few months time!

The Plan:

OK- so great…the playroom is getting an overhaul.  But what exactly does that mean right?!?

First things first, we need to assess our kids’ current needs for a playroom.  They are:

  • Our boys love Lego, American Ninja Warrior stunts, Sports such as hockey mini-sticks & basketball in the basement, superhero play, drawing, and board games.
  • Our little girl loves pretend play such as “House”, Barbie’s, dressing up, taking care of her dolls, coloring or sticker books, and building blocks.
  • All of our crafting supplies are on the main floor, so that we can keep an eye on them while they express their creativity!

So- with all that in mind…Here is our Kid Play Zone Inspiration Board!

Final Thoughts:

This is a project that the entire family is excited about!  We’ve been looking for inspiration, planning out the basement, and working together to come up with a cohesive plan that everyone is happy with!

Seriously, my oldest was drawing out his vision for the playroom- a future engineer or architect perhaps?  And my other two couldn’t wait to make a video explaining our plans!

Watch out for next Thursday’s post when we tackle the room and prep it for our different play zones.  I’ll tell you all about what we have planned for each of our play zone areas!  Ooh…the details!

Stay connected by subscribing today!  Also, don’t forget to check out what the other guest participants are working on in their spaces too!

OK, wish us luck! Think we can achieve all of this in our 5 week renovation?!?

  1. Stopping in from the ORC – I am doing my kitchen this season.

I am so excited to see how this room evolves and love your planning process so far. I have two little ones and we just kicked my husband out of his office to steal it for their playroom so it is next on my list to tackle. Haha!
