If you haven’t been following, let me re-cap what I’m talking about!

I’ve entered the One Room Challenge for the second time and decided to renovate our kids playroom in our basement.

Here are some previous posts that you can read to get to up to speed on what’s been happening in our kids playroom thus far.

Let’s begin from the top!

The Inspiration for the Pretend Zone!

When we were putting together our ideas for this playroom, we were assessing the needs and wants of our 3 kiddos.

Our daughter just loves to play house, taking care of her dolls, and in her kitchen! We wanted to provide her an area in this room dedicated to her pretend play.

Our idea? Give her her own house to play in!  Seems simple right?!

Here was our inspiration picture and vision drawing.

The Before of the Pretend Zone Playhouse:

The best location for her house was our existing playroom closet. This closet was massive and under-utilized! It would be the perfect zone for her pretend play and her toys.

Here’s a pic of the messy closet prior to the renovation beginning.

The Process of the Pretend Zone Playhouse:

1. Clean out the closet and take the existing doors and trim off.

2. Build the house exterior complete with a door and window.  We had our daughter stand in the window area to help with the sizing and height from the floor.

3. Complete the building of the playhouse by adding drywall pieces where needed, mudding, priming, and painting the walls.

4. Add the Trim & Shiplap to the house.  We are using an easy to install shiplap product found at Lowe’s.  The trim boards are made from MDF boards.

6. Paint the exterior of the house and interior of the closet too!  Our favorite white is the Milk Moustache color from Home Hardware- Beautitone Designer Series Paint.  It’s actually the main color in this entire room.

7. Add a cute flower box!  This was used with some left-over wood lying around in the garage.  We spray painted it purple for a punch of color!  Purple also happens to be one of our daughter’s favorite colors.

8. The final step for now…Add secret storage shelving inside of the closet.  This was such as awkward cubby in closet, so we decided to utilize it to the max and add some wire shelves to support larger toy bins.  I love using the clear bins so that I can see what is inside.  I still plan on labeling the bins.

Next Steps in the Playhouse Pretend Zone:

This is where we currently are, however there is still a bit to be done prior to the final reveal.

The playhouse still needs a few details before the final reveal!  They include:

  • add some “girlie” decor for our little girl such as artwork, pillows, etc.
  • provide some kitchen storage for her food items
  • add some cute flowers to the flower box
  • perhaps add a welcome sign above the door

There are still 3 weeks left in the One Room Challenge.  Next week, you will see all about our Lego Zone- the before, the process, and the current.

So stay tuned…or better yet subscribe!
