So, we’ve been freshening up our living room this past year with some simple upgrades including a new rug from nuLOOM, toss cushions, and home décor.  We upgraded our space a few years ago after moving into our home.  We revamped our entire main floor including relocation of our stairs, new flooring, adding a shiplap fireplace, and renovating the entire kitchen.

However, this past year, we decided to put on an addition off the back of our living room and add a proper-sized dining room/ flex space.  Our current dining area is more like a breakfast nook and we always wanted to have large dinner parties but didn’t have the space for hosting.  Plus, we are adding an entire wall of cabinets for tons of storage including space for all of our office & craft supplies.

Since putting on our addition, our living room space has changed a bit too and it was important for us to figure out the perfect furniture configuration for this room.  In the end, we have decided to keep our current grey sectional as it provides lots of comfy seating options for our family as well as guests.

What we are missing, however, is a great neutral accent chair.  I imagine curling up in it with a coffee, blanket, and a good book!  But what should you look for when shopping for a living room chair?

Shopping for Accent Chairs- 5 Tips to Consider

There are a few things to consider when searching for the perfect accent chair.  I hope this helps you in your own search for furniture too!

1-Purpose of the Chair

When choosing a type of accent chair, it’s important to think about the purpose of the chair.  I mentioned above that I hope to relax and curl up in my chair with a blanket, coffee & book.  It needs to be comfy yet supportive, and big enough for me to fit my whole body too.  Accent chairs can be for extra seating when guests are over or for some visual appeal in a room.  As the name suggests, they provide an accent to your style and show off a bit of your personality.  Knowing the purpose of the chair will get you started in your shopping hunt.

2- Style of Room

Consider your overall style in the room you are shopping for.  You want to choose an accent chair that will complement the space naturally.  Think about adding style through color, patterns, and even the shape of the chair.  For example, my style is coastal modern farmhouse.  I might consider adding a chair that has some rattan on it to bring in some coastal influences or maybe even a tufted style that screams farmhouse charm.  Matching your existing furniture is not necessary, but choosing something that goes with it will be the important factor.

3-Color

Look around your room and list your color palette.  Choosing a color that works well with your existing tones is key!  If you are looking to make a statement in your space, go bold in either color or pattern…or both for that matter!  Staying neutral is my jam…my home is mostly bright, white, and grey with pops of black in our lighting and coastal blues strategically placed around each room.  My sectional is a darker grey, so it is important to contrast this with a more neutral color or pattern in our accent chair.

4-Size of your Space

Another key thing that you want to keep in mind is the size of your space.  There is nothing worse than picking out a piece of furniture and bringing it home only to find that it is either way too big or small for the room.  It’s great that there are so many options to choose from when it comes to accent chairs– small, tall, chair and a half, matching set, include an ottoman perhaps?  A good tip is to use painter’s tape and tape the size of the chair out on your floor for a few days and imagine it there.  This helps determine chair placement, size and walking pathways in your space.

5-Fabric

Last but not least is the fabric.  This completely ties into everything mentioned above regarding size, color, style, and purpose.  Understanding these decisions will help make the final choice in fabric much easier as there are so many different types of fabrics to choose from.

• Going bold?  Think about adding a striking patterned accent chair.
• Enjoy a modern flair?  Look for a sleek leather chair with simple lines.
• Want it to be comfy & relaxing?  Consider choosing a soft, velvety accent chair
• Do you have kids or pets?  If so, then you are most definitely looking for fabric that is going to be durable and hold up to messes, as well be easy to clean (especially if your pet sheds!)
• Small space?  Don’t choose a wingback as the tall chair will give the illusion that it takes up a lot of space!
