Woo Hoo!  The new stairs are in!  If you’ve been following the renovation, you’ll know that we bought our forever house and are in the midst of completely transforming the space to update the look and make it feel more like OUR home and style.

Check out these related blog posts to recap our journey thus far:

When our contractor initially stopped by to have a look at the space, he mentioned that we might have room to create stairs that were either an L-shape or a U-shape.  Either or, both would give us the look that we were wanting- open concept and connection between our levels.  Once he was able to get into the space and crunch the numbers, he designed up our set of new stairs.  And…..our new stairs ended up becoming an L-shaped staircase leading down from the living room!

What WE LOVE about our L-shaped New Stairs:

  • Safety–The new stairs have a landing strip which basically means that there are less stairs to fall down (if it were to happen that is).  Also, now that they are going down to the basement from the living room instead of the mudroom, I no longer need to worry about my kids putting their shoes in danger zones!

Mudroom Closed Off

Drywall is going up and now the mudroom is a separate space all together!  …Just makes sense.

Landing Strip

See the landing pad- as my kids call it!

  • Connection– Due to the fact that the new stairs were open concept, it allowed for a connection between our two levels.  Also, the way that they turn into the rec room makes a nice entry as you can see in the pic below.  Our stairs ended up being a comfortable step tread and rise too!

Entry to Basement

  • Bigger Kitchen–The new stairs allowed us to expand our kitchen and add a Pantry Closet.  Now I will have even MORE storage in the new kitchen!  Can’t wait!

The End Result?

I know you’ve been waiting long enough to see the beautiful new stairs- industrial farmhouse style!  To achieve the industrial look, we added a black horizontal metal stair railing and black industrial farmhouse styled lantern light fixture.  Here are some options for industrial farmhouse lighting!  We carpeted the stairs for now for added comfort.  Our feature wall behind the entire staircase is farmhouse shiplap!!!!  I’m obsessed with Shiplap and would do my entire house in this design (Thanks Fixer Upper!)  I’m especially happy with the black and how much is stands out.  This marks the beginning of the REST of our renovation design.

And….I just love it!

Hi Stef– Thank you- I love my railing too! The total cost was less than $2000 (tax included)- not too shabby if you ask me 🙂

  3. Looks beautiful. Where do you get the black stair railing? Thx! Jen

Thanks so much! We contracted this black stair railing through a local railings manufacturer. We just showed him a picture of what we were looking for and 2 weeks later, it was installed! 🙂
