After a year of spending more time at home through the global pandemic, most of us spent time rethinking how we use our space so that it meets the needs of our families better. Here are 4 new room trends to watch out for in 2021. Shop the look at the bottom of the post!
When the global pandemic hit our area back in March of 2020, everything basically shut down including schools, malls, parks, and all extra-curricular activities.
Families were held hostage in their own homes, trying to make the best out of a situation that held so much uncertainty. Parents were working from home and children were doing remote learning.
In fact, life slowed down in general for most people and families were spending lots of quality time together in their homes. The needs of the families changed and different rooms in the house took on new purposes during this time. It was easy to envision & redesign the potential for each room.
Perhaps this happened in your home as well?
Today, I’m sharing with you 4 new room trends to watch out for in 2021 based on the new needs of families during this global pandemic era.
Which one(s) would work best in your home?
A flex room is a space that offers many different purposes rather than just dedicating the entire room to one use. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a central location for the entire family to use as their workspace?
So many people have had to either work from home or do homeschooling this year, that designing a family flex workspace is definitely a trending room for 2021! We are in the process of putting together our new family flex room that combines our dining room, crafting area, homework stations, and home office.

When gyms were forced to shut down, everyone who used them, had to resort to finding a location to workout at home. Garages, basements, and even bedrooms became the prime location to put together a make-shift home gym.
Workout equipment was in high demand during the global pandemic and that is exactly why this room made it onto this Top 4 Trendy Rooms for 2021!

Spending so much time together as a family requires space for creativity & fun. Our area was put into a Stay at Home order for almost 3 months this winter and finding new & exciting activities was really important to keep us positive & happy.
What does your family enjoy doing together? One of the top spaces to create and finish for 2021 would be a family fun zone.

So far, 2021 doesn’t look any different than 2020. There are still Stay at Home Orders in effect here and all extracurriculars are canceled. Looks like we will be spending lots of time at home again this year– so perhaps repurposing spaces to meet the needs of the family might be a good idea!
Which one of the 4 trending rooms for 2021 is on your wish-list for your home?
We are so thankful that we created a super fun playroom for our kiddos in the Fall 2019 One Room Challenge. It has given our family a place to hang out and do some Legos, exercise, play pretend, and climb the indoor rock wall/ monkey bars!
We intend to have all 4 of these trending rooms in our house soon enough. We have decided to deck out our basement and make it the ultimate family hangout spot. Our next room to take on in the basement is a movie room- look forward to upcoming posts about this project!
I can’t wait to get started!
