I’d like to share with you how to transform any wall in your home to a beautiful Board & Batten Wall today.  It’s so simple…really!

DIY Board & Batten Wall

We recently transformed our foyer entrance wall into a slanted board and batten wall.  I tried emphasizing this wall with an accent paint color last summer but knew it was just a temporary fix until I figured out exactly what I wanted.

Here was our before pic–Accent Wall Before

I really do love the blue color, but it’s just not what I wanted for our entryway.  Unfortunately, as bright as this color was, it was darkening up our foyer and it just felt heavy.

So…it was time for a change.

The Board & Batten Plan:

There are so many styles of board & batten- but which one will look the best on your chosen wall?  Squares, Vertical, Horizontal, Diagonal, or custom?  In fact, I have an entire Pinterest Board all about Board & Batten feature walls- check it out here–> Feature Walls I Love Pinterest Board.

Before you begin, it is important to have a plan! Envision what you would like the space to look like and then take some measurements to plan our what you will be needing in terms of product.

Here was our board & batten plan & idea for our foyer wall–>Board and Batten Plan

I wanted to enhance our vaulted ceilings in our home and therefore chose to do a vertical style of board & batten.  This could incorporate our slanted ceiling quite easily.

What you’ll Need:

  • Measuring Tape
  • Pencil
  • Level
  • Nail Gun
  • Mitre Saw
  • Primer Paint
  • Paint in color of your choice
  • Painting supplies- roller, brush, tape, etc
  • Paintable Caulking
  • either MDF boards or wood (your choice) in the appropriate width & length

DIY Board & Batten Wall- The Tutorial:

OK- I said this was so simple right?  Here are your steps to creating this wall– follow along and soon enough you will have an amazing wall to showcase too 🙂

Here was our starting point- watch the transformation–

Before Foyer Wall

1-Prime & Paint

  • Prime and paint the wall & trim boards before putting them up!
  • We purchased our trim boards already primed, so that saved us some time here.
  • As for the paint, we gave the wall a couple of coats before we started adding the trim boards.

2-Add the outside trim border

  • Due to the fact that we were working with a slanted wall, we divided our 2 sections with a wide trim board first.
  • Then, we added the remainder of our trim boards.  The slanted wall took the most time as we had to work with angled cuts.
  • We used 2 trim widths for our project- 1″ x 6″ and 1″x 3″ (see our plan above)

3-Attach the trim boards

  • Attach the trim boards with a nail gun.  Don’t forget to use a level to ensure that they are perfect!

4-Measure

  • Measure out the interior space and determine where your boards will go.
  • We wanted to put one right down the middle of the wall and then divided the space to the left & right in half to find the other location of the boards.

5-Finishing Touches

  • Use painters caulking to get rid of any space between the trim board and your wall.
  • Also, fix any nail holes with some drywall *

6-Paint!

  • Paint the final coats on your new board & batten wall!
  • We love using the Beautitone Trim & Door paint from Home Hardware in our favorite white color- Milk Moustache!

7-Complete the Look

  • Add in items such as a mirror, entryway table or bench, and table decor to finish off space.
  • I like to switch up the look of my table every season and for special holidays 🙂

And voila!  Your Board & Batten Wall is complete!

Total Time & Cost:

The entire wall was up and installed in a matter of 2 hours.  The only other time it took was to prime & paint- which really, each coat only took about 20 minutes- it’s just the waiting in between.

The cost included buying paint and trim boards which totaled just under $200!  However, I would like to note that we used wood trim boards and for an inexpensive version, you could switch to MDF boards and it would be half the cost!

Worth it?

Oh yes- most definitely!
