How to Decorate with Mirrors

I love shopping for mirrors and often find myself oohing and aahing at so many beautiful options that are available!  Mirrors are the perfect addition to any space and instantly add to your home design & décor.  They are popular choices to display in your front entryway, above a fireplace, bathrooms, and bedrooms too!

Here are some simple tips to consider when decorating your home with mirrors.

Home Design Style

When shopping for mirrors, always keep in mind your personal flair and the design of your home.  You want to create a cohesive look that includes color, textures, “feel”, and décor throughout your home that matches your personal design style.  Is your home modern, traditional, contemporary, farmhouse, coastal, bohemian, or transitional?

For example, my style is Coastal Modern Farmhouse.  My color scheme is white, black, grey, with pops of seafoam and teal here and there.  As much as I may love large vintage mirrors, they are just not the right fit for our home.  Keeping in line with my farmhouse vibe is key when shopping for any type of decoration- this means color, material, size & shape too!  Shop my home if you love the Coastal Modern Farmhouse style as well!

Size of Mirrors

Consider the size of your room as well as the height of your ceilings.  It would be a mistake to buy an oversized mirror for such a tiny room and vice versa.  Vaulted ceilings or two-story ceilings require tall mirrors to balance out space visually.

Shape

Mirrors come in many different shapes.  But all shapes don’t go with different home styles.  For example–hexagon, pentagon, octagon, and geometric-shaped mirrors would be more suitable for a modern or contemporary home.  Alternatively, an arched tall mirror is perfect for a traditional space.  Square or rectangle ones offer clean lines and a simple design.  Round mirrors attract the eye and provide a captivating focal point in any space.  If you are looking for an ornate or sophisticated look, try choosing one with a shapely framework that will instantly add character to any room!

Mirrors as Focal Points

Do you have a spot in your room that is the focal area you want everyone to see?  This might be a fireplace, above a cabinet or table, or even perhaps a feature wall?  A mirror will automatically draw your eye to the focal point in any room and add an instant wow factor too!

Depth

Don’t be afraid to layer a mirror in your design with other mirror frames, quotes, or even art.  Try using different shapes and sizes in this design trick.  This provides visual interest and dimension or texture to your space.  A perfect location to try this layering technique would be on your fireplace mantel.

Enlarge a Space

Use mirrors to make spaces seem larger than they actually are.  This is great in small rooms as it creates an illusion of more space.  Who doesn’t want their room to feel twice as big?

Reflection

Consider adding mirrors to wall spaces that will absorb & bounce the light around the room. This could be in a darker room or one that doesn’t get a lot of natural light.  It will reflect and add light to that space instantly, brightening up the room and make it feel more comfortable and happier too.

Where NOT to Hang Mirrors!

Did you know that there are some rules about where NOT to hang mirrors too!  Some of them are common sense, however, some of them refer to feng shui and disrupting the energy of a space.  Do NOT hang your mirrors:

  • Across from your front door
  • In the Kitchen (the best place to hang a mirror is in the dining room!)
  • Reflecting messy or disorganized areas of the home
  • At the end of a hallway
  • Facing your Office Desk
  • Behind a Bed or Sofa
  • Across from a Toilet
  • Opposite your Bed
