Furniture Spray Paint Makeover

Today I’d like to share with you my honest review of this product and the process I took to spray painting my accent cabinet.

Please note- I am not sponsored or receiving any monetary value for this product.  Instead, I just wanted to share this simple revamp project I did.

OK- to start- COVID hit and I found myself stranded in my home and unable to go to the hardware store/ home decor shops.  This means that taking on any big room reno project was out of the question.

So, instead, I resorted to looking around my home and taking on simple DIY’s that have been on the back of my mind for a while…including fixing a cute cabinet we had.

Luckily for me, this DIY project has been on my to-do list for some time now and I already had the resources to finish it, …just needed the time to prioritize this project, that’s all.

I had picked up a couple of cans of Rust-Oleum chalk spray paint in a Charcoal color and they were just sitting in our garage cupboard waiting to be used.

Here are some other projects I’ve completed during COVID.  I’ve tried to stay as busy as possible- go and have a look 🙂

The Accent Cabinet- Before

I purchased this cute accent cabinet from Home Sense 2 houses ago and the good news is that I still really love it!  It’s small with loads of storage and because of the neutral colors, it has fit into my design style at all 3 of our homes.

Plus, it’s so versatile with what can go in it.  So far, it’s been in our front foyer storing hats and mitts, etc.  Then in our mudroom where we used it as our command center hub and kept our bills, mail, keys, etc.  Now it sits in our living room and stores some craft materials for the kiddos including paper, pencil crayons, markers, etc.

However, through the years, the white paint color has turned yellowish and I really started to notice it after painting our home crisp white and light grey paint tones!

So…this is why this cute accent cabinet is getting a quick revamp with some Rust-Oleum Chalk Spray Paint!

Why Rust-Oleum Chalk Paint?

When you hit the hardware store spray paint aisle, there are heaps of options in both finish and color!  Rust-Oleum is one of the top brands of spray paint around and therefore a great choice all around!

Here is what I was looking for:

  • easy to use
  • color that fell into our style/ design palette of whites and greys
  • no priming necessary!
  • a “farmhouse” finish- no glossy or shiny surfaces
  • quick to dry or not needed to do many coats of paint

Chalk paint gives a matte appearance when applied to home decor or furniture.  It’s a perfect choice to add some farmhouse charm or even when desiring a distressed finished look!

The perfect choice for me!

The Accent Cabinet- Process

OK- ready to see how I gave my accent cabinet a makeover?

Step 1:

  • Remove contents of the cabinet as well as the drawers, door and knobs.

Step 2:

  • Tape and cover the top of the accent cabinet that was NOT getting spray painted (I wanted to keep the wood look) using painter’s tape and newspaper.

Tape the Top of Furniture

Step 3:

  • Set up a location to spray paint the accent cabinet that is ventilated and protected from the elements. *We used our garage*
  • Make sure to cover the floor with cardboard, newspaper, or a drop cloth of some sort.

Step 4:

  • Wipe down the accent cabinet and make sure there is no dust or particles.  Wait until it’s completely dry!
  • Read the directions on the spray paint can prior to using it.
  • Spray Paint and cover all areas of the accent cabinet.  Use thin and multiple coats rather than one thick coat.  Use a similar spray pattern each time to maximize the consistency such as from side to side.
  • Also, keep the spray paint valve clean so that it doesn’t clog up.

Use Thin Spray Painting Coats
Here is the door after 2 thin coats- 1 more and it should be perfect!

Step 5:

  • Once you are happy with the look of the spray-painted cabinet- let it dry completely.
  • Then, check for any final touch-ups.  I like checking in different lights to see any potential fixes that need to be done.

Now it’s just a waiting game…

Step 6:

  • Remove the painter’s tape & newspaper, add the knobs and insert the drawers/ doors back to the cabinet.

**Option**

  • An option that you can do is to add a wax finish to the cabinet to seal it and create that farmhouse feel.  I did NOT do this portion because I wanted to see how the Rust-Oleum Spray Paint held up with my kiddos in and out of it!

The Accent Cabinet- Final Reveal

OK- so that was easy!

I’ve been putting this DIY off for so long and in the end, it was a simple revamp that anyone can do!

Here’s the final look using Rust-Oleum’s Chalk Paint in Charcoal–>

The hardest part of it all was emptying out the contents of the cabinet.  Only really because that meant that I needed to go through everything and organize it all 😉

My Thoughts on the Rust-Oleum Chalk Paint Spray Paint:

Here is my honest review of this product–>

  • It was SO EASY to use!
  • I love the matte, dull finish of the paint
  • This spray paint gives me the farmhouse finish I was looking for!
  • I love that I didn’t need to sand or even prime the cabinet prior to using the chalk spray paint
  • The entire cabinet took 2 cans of spray paint- that’s it!  A total of about $20 for a completely updated look!
  • There was a couple of times when I sprayed too much and caused some drips to form.  All I needed to do was quickly wipe them away and cover that area on my next coat!  Easily Fixed!

**UPDATE**

So…interesting revamp update.  As much as I loved the ease, color, and finish of the accent cabinet at the end of this DIY, when I put the accent cabinet back in the space, it just didn’t look “right”.

So…I ended up spray painting it AGAIN with the Rust-Oleum Chalk Paint.  But this time in Linen White.  It did take 3 cans to coat the cabinet this round, but that is because I was covering such a dark color.  I still am super happy with the overall quality and ease of the product!

Here is now the FINAL look now–> much better in the space wouldn’t you say?!?

Using Chalk Paint- Review

In the end, I would highly RECOMMEND this product for anyone who wants to give a piece of furniture or even some home decor a quick update/ change or revamp!
