Rustic Farmhouse Feature Wall Tutorial- Shared Boys Bedroom

Welcome back!  We are so close to the final reveal of our shared boys bedroom.  However, today, the focus is all about our Rustic Farmhouse Feature Wall!

I knew that I wanted a feature wall in the boys bedroom, I was just deciding on contining with our shiplap look, or achieving something completly different for them.  Wood, wallpaper, painted accent wall…the choices!

Today, I want to share the idea & inspiration, the steps, the cost, and the final look of our feature wall.

Rustic Farmhouse Inspiration

As I was getting some ideas from Pinterest for my design for this shared boys bedroom, I came across this amazing wall below from Project Nursery and knew that this was the look I was going to try and achieve.

The main area of our house is Coastal Modern Farmhouse, and I knew that I didn’t want to stray too far from this farmhouse theme, yet giving my boys a bit of rustic elements in their room.

Supplies Needed:

• Wall Paint & supplies
• Barn Boards & Varnish
• Measuring Tape
• Nail Gun
• Spacers
• Long Level
• Pencil 🙂

The 5 Steps to Creating a Rustic Farmhouse Feature Wall:

1-Paint the background color

• We chose a nice blue paint (still in the coastal family) from Home Hardware.  It is Beautitone’s Signature Series Velvet paint in the colour Ocean Storms!

2-Find Barn Board

• We purchased the barn board from our local hardware store.  We knew that we needed approximately 7 ft, so we chose the pieces closest to this size possible.
• The funny part was that we were looking for the most interesting pieces with holes, knots, curves, and imperfections.  The guy working was confused as most people try to take the nicest looking boards.
• HINT–Make sure you know how many boards you will need prior to going ot the hardware store.

3-Prep the Barn Board

• Decide on if you are going to stain your boards or keep them natural.
• We really liked the color of the barn board as is, so all we needed to do was put on a few clear coats of varnish to protect them.

4-Rustic Farmhouse Feature Wall

• Now it’s time to put together the rustic farmhouse feature wall!
• We used our trusty nail gun to attach the barn boards to the wall.
• HINT– Use a pencil to mark out the studs by drawing a faint line on each stud board.
• In addition, make sure to measure the space and calculate the distance between each board.
• Use a spacer to help determine the exact height between each board.

5-Add Accessories

• Add accessories such as hooks, mirror, frames, or artwork.
• We chose 4 hooks to hang up items like pajamas & hats.
• In addition, we found the perfect modern farmhouse mirror in a silver metal and hung the rope in the correct height for our boys.

The Cost- Rustic Farmhouse Feature Wall:

The entire cost of this wall included:

          • barn wood planks

          • hooks
          • mirror

Total Cost: $200 ~ approximately

Final Reveal of Rustic Farmhouse Feature Wall:

So, for a little cost, you can have a HUGE impact as a rustic farmhouse feature wall in your home!

This wall REALLY makes me happy each time I walk into the boys bedroom!
