Can you believe that there is only 1 week left until the final reveal of the One Room Challenge Fall 2019?

I can’t!

There is so much happening in our kid’s playroom at the moment and it seems like we are going to need our final push to get to the end!

This week’s post is all about our final zone in our kids playroom- The Adventure Zone!  The most exciting one yet–

The Adventure Zone- ORC Fall

If you haven’t been following, let me re-cap what I’m talking about!

I’ve entered the One Room Challenge for the second time and decided to renovate our kids playroom in our basement.

Here are some previous posts that you can read to get up to speed on what’s been happening in our kids playroom thus far.

Let’s begin from the top!

The Inspiration for the Adventure Zone!

When we were putting together our ideas for this playroom, we were assessing the needs and wants of our 3 kiddos.

Our kids have become avid adventurists!  They love going park hopping in the summer months and spending lots of time climbing the equipment and giving us mild anxiety attacks in the process!  Can you relate?

Not only that, but they are roller coaster & water-park enthusiasts and can’t wait until they get just a bit bigger to go on the tallest ones around!

Plus…their favorite tv show this past summer was American Ninja Warrior.  They’ve been crafting together several obstacle courses around the house, both inside and outside based off of this show.

So, our final zone in the kids playroom is the Adventure Zone.  As the winter months draw nearer, we wanted the kids to be able to exert some of their energy and enjoy an indoor play area!

The Process of Achieving the Adventure Zone:

1. Clean out the room and move the toys elsewhere.

2. Prime and Paint the Walls.

  • Our favorite white is the Milk Moustache color from Home Hardware– Beautitone Designer Series Paint.

What an improvement already! Bye Bye Stripes!

3. Build the Loft Area.

  • We knew that we wanted a loft area that the kids could climb up to and hang out.  There would be no ladder up either- tricky!
  • We had the perfect nook area in the playroom to build this loft hangout area.
  • Underneath the loft provided an excellent area to store some toys.  They would be organized in cubby bins and hidden out of sight too!

See the secret toy storage?!?

4. Build the Mountain Feature Rock Wall.  There is going to be an extensive step-by-step blog post as to how we created this rock wall next month, so for now, I’m just going to give the quick low-down on what we did.

  • Plan Out the Mountain Feature Wall

  • Trim the Mountains

  • Shiplap the Mountains

LOVE IT!!!

  • Add the Rock Wall Pieces- yet to be done, but this is the rock wall piece that we chose- it was purchased from Amazon and looks like real stone!

6. Build the Monkey Bars.

  • Fun idea right!  We decided to use industrial pipe to create our monkey bars.  They are 18 inches wide and will hang down 6 inches from the ceiling.

  • First thing that needed to be done was put them together.  They were all greased up and needed to be cleaned once put together.
  • Unfortunately, they gave off a black film on your hands when touched.  So, we decided to spray paint them a matte black!

So cool!

Next Steps in the Adventure Zone:

This is where we currently are- Halloween is tomorrow night and this has filled our time for the last few days!  You know, costumes, Halloween decorations & pumpkin carving of course!

There is still a bit to be done prior to the final reveal.

The Adventure Zone

The Adventure Zone still needs a few details before the final reveal!  They include:

  • Final paint touch-ups
  • Install the Monkey Bars
  • Install a Climbing Rope
  • Add some pillows & decor to the loft area
  • Add some labels to the toy storage bins
  • Buy some much needed mats for underneath the monkey bars

There is only 1 week left in the One Room Challenge.  Next week, you will see all the FINAL REVEAL!  So excited!

Now..just need my final wind of energy to take over as we enter this weekend!  Wish us luck 🙂

Hi Lindsay! Head over to the Inspired to Shop/ Shop My Home tab and all the Amazon links are here! The real stone looking ones are so cool and I love the neutral element of them too 🙂

  7. Hi! We are wanting to install the rock wall pieces on our kids’ wall too. What’s the secret to keeping them secure? Did you install each rock to a stud?

  8. Author

Hi Nichole- There are actually a couple of things that we did to ensure safety of our rock wall. First, our mountain shiplap boards are all screwed to the studs for added strength. Then, our rock wall pieces are strategically placed on the studs as well, for the most part. We also used GRK fastener screws that we drilled the rock wall pieces into the walls with- they provide added support than regular screws. I hope this helps 🙂

  9. Hi I saw your post through Pinterest. Did you do this in basement or upper level. Then how did you install the monkey bars. How did you ensure it’s safe and secure

Hi Gayathri! Thanks for your interest in our playroom adventure zone! Our playroom is located in the basement. Here are some details as to how we installed the monkey bars to ensure they are safe, secure and not going anywhere when climbed on 🙂

The 2×4’s run perpendicular to the basement ceiling joists and were screwed in using GRK 3 1/2 inch screws. Once the 2×4’s were installed, it was time to add the monkey bars. My husband wrenched the pipes together in order to get the pipes the exact same in width (or as close as possible). The floor flanges for the pipes were screwed into the 2×4’s with #10 tapered screws (1.5-inch screws- not sure what is available in your area, but this screw pulls the flange in tight to the 2×4).

And that’s it 🙂 I hope this helps- Good luck on your project!

  11. Hi how is the spray paint holding up on the monkey bars? I’m wanting to do this but wondered if the paint comes off over time. Love your play room! So fun!

Hi Kindra! Thanks so much for the kind words! This October will mark 1 year since the monkey bars were installed and I can tell you that they still look brand new…despite our 3 kiddos climbing all over them 🙂
